GME Competency Education Platform (GCEP)

The American Medical Association has created a series of GME competency modules for residents and fellows to complete. These modules are an integral part of the educational component of your residency/fellowship with LSU School of Medicine and are to be completed during your first, second, and third year of training. Completion of these modules is MANDATORY for promotion to the next house officer level and graduation.  For more information, visit the American Medical Association's GME Competency Education Program website.

The GME Competency Education Platform gives residents tools to develop and measure their knowledge and skills to help meet ACGME competency education requirements. The short courses reduce the time needed for education, thus reducing the stress on residents. Residents can keep track of completed courses and obtain their own printable certificates verifying they passed the post-assessments. Each course contains interactive elements so residents can apply their learning to real-time situations, and automated email due-date reminders keep residents on track. With 24-hour access and content optimized for mobile, residents can complete courses and assessments at their convenience.  Residents can review their current testing status or see detailed reports on completed assignments in their progress file.

Here is a guide to GCEP for new house officers. Please use this as a resource to share with your trainees.

titleFAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do my residents log on to GCEP?

If they received a welcome email, they can click that link and follow the instructions there. If they did not receive that email or the link in their email has expired, please follow the instructions HERE. If they have any issues logging into the platform, please have themcontact AMA Member Relations at (800) 262-3211 or email GCEPhelp@ama-assn.org Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm CT.

Who has to complete GCEP modules?

Residents - All LSUSHC residents have to complete at least three years of GCEP courses. After three years, they have completed this requirement. If you have a resident that has completed these requirements but is still enrolled in GCEP courses after their third year, please contact Savannah Thibodeaux to correct this.

Fellows - If your fellow completed their residency at LSUHSC and completed their required GCEP modules during training, they do not have to complete any GCEP modules during fellowship. If your fellow completed residency at a different institution, they will have to complete up to 2 years of GCEP courses. If you are a one-year or two-year fellowship, your fellows will complete GCEP courses each year of their training. If you are a three-year fellowship, your fellows only need to complete GCEP courses in their first two years. If you have a fellow that has completed these requirements but is still enrolled in GCEP courses after their second year, please contact Savannah Thibodeaux to correct this.

Incoming House Officers - All incoming house officers are required to complete a series of five GCEP courses prior to their start date. More information about this can be found HERE.

When are GCEP modules due?

All assigned GCEP modules must be completed by June 30. This is a requirement for promotion and graduation.

Our program is unaccredited. Do we still have to complete GCEP courses.

Yes. GCEP courses are required for ALL programs, regardless of accreditation status.

One of my trainees failed a course. What do we do?

Email Savannah Thibodeaux to re-enroll the trainee in the course.

How do I run reports?

HERE is a step-by-step guide on what we've found is the most efficient way to run reports on GCEP. The AMA-GCEP Admin Resources also has several how-to guides about reports. You can view those HERE.

Can our program assign additional courses to our trainees? What about faculty?

Yes! AMA-GCEP has a full course catalog that you can view HERE. There are additional courses and curricula available, and there is a series of faculty development courses, If you would like to enroll any of your residents or faculty in additional courses, please contact Savannah Thibodeaux

titleHelpful Tips

Helpful Tips

Below are some tips from fellow program coordinators and directors on managing the AMA-GCEP requirement:

  • Monitor progress regularly - Setting up automatic monthly reports makes it easy to see the progress of each resident. You can even share a monthly report with your residents to remind them that this is a requirement and you are monitoring this. It's also helpful to include this in your CCC meetings and semi-annual evaluations. Remind them that GCEP is part of their professionalism duties.
  • Set quarterly deadlines - If you set a deadline each quarter for 25%, then your residents are making steady progress during the year instead of feeling the push in June.
  • Set an earlier completion deadline - Some programs have decided that their residents must complete their GCEP modules by December 31. This way, it frees up both the residents' and the coordinators' time in the Spring when everyone is busy with onboarding and graduation.
  • Set consequences - Some program directors/coordinators will not approve leave requests or travel priors if the resident hasn't met certain benchmarks on the GCEP courses.

If you want to add any tips that work with your program, email Savannah to add them here!
