GME

Description:

A physician in a graduate medical education residency program accredited by the ACGME.   These physicians have successfully completed medical school and are undergoing specialty-specific training which will allow them to obtain board certification.  Many states will not fully license physicians until they have completed an accredited program.

Historically, the term resident was used because the resident physicians actually lived at the hospital where they were working. 

Occasionally, the term resident is used to refer both to residents and Fellows.
