Description: | A Residency Program (similar to a degree program in college) consists of specific required activities to allow a physician to become board certified. The trainees in a program can be referred to as Residents, House Officers or Interns. This training is in the residency program lasts between 3 and 7 years, and is accredited by the ACGME. Completing a residency program allows a physician to obtain board certification in their chosen specialty, and in many states, is required for licensure. Completion of a residency is also required before continuing training in a more specialized Fellowship. Residency programs are led by a Program Director, and a Program Coordinator is typically in charge of the administrative work needed to run the program. |
