Full Name:

Fellowship Program

Acronym / Abbreviation:

Purpose / Type:

GME

Description:

A Fellowship Program is similar to a Residency Program, but it consists of more specialized training.  The trainees in a program are called Fellows, but are sometimes referred to as Residents or House Officers. This training is done after successfully completing a residency, and lasts between 1 and 4 years.  Most, but not all fellowship programs are accredited by the ACGME

Like residency programs, Fellowship Programs are led by a Program Director, and a Program Coordinator is typically in charge of the administrative work needed to run the program.

Fellowship Programs usually have a related Residency Program, and completion of that program is required before entering the Fellowship.  This is usually denoted in the name of the program, so the name Medicine-Gastroenterology refers to the Gastroenterology program related to the Internal Medicine program and Pediatrics-Gastroenterology refers to the Gastroenterology program related to the Pediatrics program.
