DEA Numbers

DEA Numbers

DEA Numbers are required for physicians to prescribe controlled substances. DEA numbers are issued by either the facility the House Officer is working at, or by the US Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration.  The LSU GME Office is not involved in the assignment of DEA numbers.

For House Officers with a PGY or GETP Permit

House Officers practicing under a permit are issued a temporary DEA number by the facility at which they are working.  This DEA number may only be used to write prescriptions at the facility which issued the number.  Questions about this DEA number need to be addressed to the Point-of-Contact or GME office at the facility.

For House Officers with a Full License

House Officers with a full license should obtain a full, permanent DEA number.  House Officers can apply online at the DEA website at https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugreg/

For Terminating House Officers

Terminating house officers should obtain their own DEA number.  See DEA Information for Outgoing House Officers for information.
