National Provider Identifier (NPI)

What is a National Provider Identifier

A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique, 10 digit number required for all healthcare practitioners.  Numbers are assigned and maintained by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES)

Who Needs an NPI

All LSU residents and fellows are required to have an NPI.

What is Required to Obtain an NPI

The only thing required to request an NPI is a Social Security Number.  A valid medical license is NOT required to obtain an NPI.

How is an NPI Requested
