Description:

Three step examination that assesses a physician's ability to apply knowledge, concepts and principles that are important in health and disease, and that constitute the basis of safe and effective patient care. Used by medical licensing authorities in the US for granting initial license to practice medicine.

Step 1 and Step 2 are typically taken while in Medical School.  Step 3 is taken during the first or second year of residency training, and must be passed before beginning a third year of residency training.
