Description:

Residency generally refers to the training that a physician receives after graduation from medical school.  This training is done through a Residency Program which generally lasts between 3 and 7 years, and is accredited by the ACGME.  Completing a residency program allows a physician to obtain board certification in their chosen specialty, and in many states, is required for licensure.  Completion of a residency is also required before continuing training in a more specialized Fellowship.
